Privacy

Instant mode speaks using voices your browser or operating system already has installed — nothing is downloaded or sent anywhere. Neural mode downloads the open-weight Kokoro-82M model (Apache 2.0 licence) from Hugging Face’s CDN to your device — after that one-time download, every reading in either mode happens entirely on your device, and nothing you type is ever sent to a server. Kokoro’s text-to-phoneme step also loads a small espeak-ng-based component (GPL-licensed, fetched separately from the model itself) the first time you use Neural mode.

What this is for

Instant mode wraps your browser’s own speech engine — the same technology behind operating-system screen readers and read-aloud features. Neural mode downloads and runs Kokoro-82M — a small, open-weight (Apache 2.0) neural text-to-speech model — entirely on your own device, no server involved. Either way it’s useful for proofreading your own writing by ear, previewing how a page might sound before a real accessibility test, or simply as an easy way to listen to text instead of reading it on screen.

What this is — and isn’t. This reads plain text you paste in. Instant mode uses whichever voices your browser or operating system already has installed — quality and how natural it sounds vary a lot by device. Neural mode uses the same AI voice everywhere, which usually sounds much more natural, at the cost of a one-time model download. Either way, it is not a substitute for testing a real page with real assistive technology (NVDA, JAWS, VoiceOver, TalkBack) or with people who use it every day — it’s a quick, free way to hear your own words before those tests.
